Powerful Differentiation Tools
We know that a vast majority of classrooms include readers at many different levels, and also many English Language Learners. Storyworks 2 strives to make sure that all your students get the most out of our resources.
Try these resources in your classroom today.
1. Leveled Texts
1. Leveled Texts
Lower-level versions of the Big Read feature, the Words & Pictures feature, the Paired Texts and the debate are available online. Our lower-level version of the Big Read feature is just two pages. This gives an entry point to all of your learners. We also offer a higher-level version of the Big Read for your advanced readers.
2. Video Read Alouds
2. Video Read Alouds
We always create a Video Read Aloud of the Big Read. This is a video of the article itself, with the photos brought to life with amazing footage. You can use the Video Read Aloud in several ways:
- You can show it to your struggling readers before reading the article. This lets them hear all of the words to the story and helps build their reading stamina when it’s time for them to read the article themselves.
- You can show it to your students after they read the article, as a way to reinforce comprehension and make sure they picked up on all of the key details.
3. Listen to the Stories
3. Listen to the Stories
In Magazine View, you can click on the Read Aloud button at the top of the screen. Then you will hear a person read the story or article aloud, with each word highlighted as you go. This feature is great for all readers, especially if kids are learning at home, and really helps English language learners.
4. Differentiated Quizzes
4. Differentiated Quizzes
Some of the Storyworks 2 quizzes come on two levels: one with more questions and one with fewer. You can see the chart in every four-page Digital Resource Guide that comes with each print edition to see which quizzes are available at a lower level every month.
5. Vocabulary Slideshows
5. Vocabulary Slideshows
In our vocabulary slideshows, words are pronounced, defined, and accompanied by a photo. This is an amazing tool for previewing vocabulary. Many of our articles and stories comes with a vocabulary slideshow. You can see the chart in the four-page Digital Resource Guide that comes with each print edition to see which stories have a vocabulary slideshow that month.
6. A Variety of Levels in One Magazine
6. A Variety of Levels in One Magazine
The stories and articles in every issue of Storyworks 2 come in a variety of levels.
- The Words & Picture feature is written in chunked text, easy to navigate and with lots of picture support. This feature is great for lower-level readers and also builds background knowledge for all readers.
- The Mini Graphic Novel also has small bits of text with easy storylines and tons of picture support. Many kids will turn to this feature first because it’s so much fun and also so easy to read.
- On the more challenging side, the Big Read is six pages of second-grade-level nonfiction, packed with nonfiction text features. Our goal is for the stories in just one issue to appeal to many different interests and at many different reading levels, so that all kids have “a way in.”
- The Partner Reading feature is meant for two students to read aloud to each other, over and over. We created this feature to help children build their reading fluency. It’s purposely on an easier level so kids don’t stumble as much when they read aloud. At the same time, it’s packed with information.
